Platinum miners to strike in South Africa again

October 29th, 2013 by Cecilia Jamasmie

Workers at The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) seem to be on a strike spree, as they voted to strike at Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd. (Implats) ’s South African operations, and said they are considering downing tools at Anglo American Platinum (Amplats)’s mines.

Representatives of Amcu, which is the largest labour group at Impala, told Business Day they will walk out of work at the world’s biggest platinum mine, which accounts for about 25% of the global supply. However they said the timing of the strike hasn’t been decided yet.

The same union, which declared a wage dispute with Amplats last Friday, is also mulling to strike if the government mediator can’t resolve the issue with the company, which is the world’s leading producer of platinum.

Amcu miners went on an 11-day strike in September, which cost Amplats close to $103 million in lost revenue.
